The Move
I borrowed a copy of their "Greatest Hits" from my brother the other day. I was quite pleasantly surprised. Much more "depth" than the Flowers in The Rain & Fire Brigade Radio 1 pop shit.

That is all

Agree, Roy Wood for me is a musical legend

Re: The Move
Perhaps this is one of those times when language has changed. When 'Bad' is 'Good' or 'Gay' is 'Useless'. Shit to me means rubbish. In terms of what he wrote, when he wrote it, I'd argue Roy Wood barely wrote anything shit at all. I understand 'Fire Brigade' wouldn't be on any Radiohead album now but everything has to be heard in terms of what it was and when it was recorded. The Move made the crossover from a burgeoning underground scene - i.e. the type of thing that didn't get played much on daytime radio - to chart hits remarkably well. When they broke The Move would only have been recognised by singles sales as not much else existed. Later they changes and 'Blackberry Way' is a good example; a kind of pre-prog tune that actually made No: 1. If I had to categorise - and I hate to do that - I'd put them in the classy pop hits area.

"The Move were a tremendous singles band."

Maybe they were "too good" a singles band as I never really noticed anything by them apart from the two songs you mention - and I stand by the Radio 1 pop shit category as there was, at the time, fuck all else to listen to on a regular basis for the majority of teenagers.

The prime theme of the post was my surprise at what they actually had produced at and around that time as my initial thoughts were that it would have been a challenge to get 2, 1960s, pop songs to fill a 75 minute CD.

That and how that music seemed to have eluded every other music source I've listened to since the 1960s - some of the tracks wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on the "From a point at sea..."Radio Caroline/North Sea International album stations.

Re: The Move
The Move were a tremendous singles band. Night of Fear and Fire Brigade were stand outs, and I can Hear The Grass grow had a great bass line.

And their lead singer, Carl Wayne married Miss Diane off Crossroads.

Re: The Move
I don't think the Move made pop shit at all, even I Can Hear the Grass Grow, is a fantastic track

Re: The Move
What's wrong with the term 'pop shit'? I know exactly what he means and I happen to agree. Though I've yet to hear anything by The Move that isn't 'pop shit'.

'Pop shit' Seriously?

Re: The Move
I think their last album, Message from the Country, was their best but just as they were getting somewhere, with Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood, they pulled the plug and formed ELO.

Must have been having a funny turn when I posted that earlier. I meant Disturbance, not Distortions, obviously enough.

Re: The Move
The ELO??? Yeah but the Move are still good despite that

Re: The Move
Great band. Distortions, Wave the Flag and Stop the Train, Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited. Lots of great songs as well as the hits.
